"INDEX listname" doesn't return the index of messages. It returns the index of notebook archives (some call these notelogs, or archive logs) that <contain> the messages. (The only exception would be if you have the notebook frequency set to "Separate", in which case you get a separate "notelog" for each message, but if you're using web archives you're not set to "Separate", because the web archive interface doesn't support "Separate" notelogs.)
