My guess is that the spam filter didn't notice that this was a spam, but it was rejected on the unmoderated lists because on the unmoderated lists you require the poster to be a subscriber. I don't know whether it is possible to require that on a moderated list (other than for the moderator to enforce it manually which is what you've got now). Being the system admin for the server on which we run Listserv, I frequently see cases where some non-existent address sends spam to a bunch of lists. I see them in this case because the non-existent spammer address causes Listserv's attempted notifications to the spammer to bounce to me.... What I see is "You are not allowed to post the the BLAH list from your blah@blah.blah...." for all the public non-moderated lists, and "Your message has been forwarded to the moderator of the BLAH list...." for all the moderated public lists. But blessed peace and quiet - no messages at all - for the those lists which have always been confidential! We are making a lot of confidential lists these days.... I do notice that often either the non-existent spammer address or the spam subject or contents are altered to incorporate the name of the list in some way. Perhaps this is to foil the spam detector by making the messages seem unique. Margaret King Michigan State University
