Don't I wish that were so; we're still on 1.8d and the O-o-Os are ... annoying.
 
FWIW, in an Exchange environment, you can stop it locally, (local mail here does not generate an O-o-O in response to posts from the UGA listserver), but this is not scalable; other combinations of mail system and listserver will redistribute.  Upgrading your version is the best way.
