I usually see 98-99% of deliveries happen in under 3-5 seconds, if the destination MTA is up, reachable, and willing to accept mail. The other 0.5-1% end up queueing until the remote MTA either comes up, becomes reachable, or stops tossing 4xx SMTP reply codes at us.
