regarding: <------------ Date: Wed, 29 Oct 86 15:49:23 EDT From: Jeffrey R Kell <JEFF@UTCVM> The BSMTP envelope works *unless* the mailing will be subsequently forwarded to another mailer without a defined BSMTP 3 exit, in which case it will *not* work. The BSMTP will directly process any included text by the RCPT TO: tags in the envelope, but if one of the recipients is on another machine with a MAILER BITNET 2 exit, for example, the text inside the envelope is forwarded to the other mailer without BSMTP, and there is consequently improper RFC822 for the next mailer to deliver the file (ie, the recipient must be in the RFC header). If you try BSMTP then insure that all receiving mailers are talking to each other with BSMTP. ------------> This is a problem that I've complained about for a long time... one solution is (of course) to get everyone who has a mailer to user BSMTP. A second sol'n (and I've actually done this at times) is to go through you mailer profile after you've constructed it using MG and xedit all the BITNET exits to DEFRT exits... ie. force your mailer to punch directly to the user. This is adequate for all but those gateways who want the BITNET protocol. Maybe Allen will have another Xmas present this year that will convince all people to use BSMTP. The old BITNET protocol was a very big mistake. -- Title: Postmaster (E-mail) University of Western Ontario Telephone: (519) 661 2151 ext 6044 Postal: Computing and Communications Services Natural Sciences Centre University of Western Ontario London, Ontario N6A 5B7 Canada CDN: (postmaster,reggers)@uwo-hobbit.UWO.CDN BITNET: (postmast,a362)@uwocc1.BITNET MLNET: (postmaster,reggers)@uwo-hobbit.MLNET UUCP: (postmaster,reggers)@deepthot.UUCP (.decvax!watmath!deepthot..)
