The problem of having to reply to erroneous messages is frequent. I would suggest an algorithm that would propose a reply; it's up to the user to decide to modify and send it. By making it easier to compose replies, everyone on the list can help by sending a message to the offending individual. There should be a check on how old the erroneous message is, to avoid people getting messages two weeks after the mistake. Surely, someone will have answered by then! Maybe messages that are short (less than 3 lines), and contain certain key words, like "subscribe", "sign", "on", "list" should be trapped for apporval before being broadcast. Members would be spared the annoyance of empty messages and subscribe requests. One person at each site could perhaps take care of several lists; the function is so easy that the moderator need not be involved with most of these messages. In the longer term, the ergonomics of the system should be changed so that broadcast commands would be distinguishable from messages to a specific set of users. Then, the user could be queried whether he really wants his message broadcast. I'd like to see what other members of the list think.
