IMHO, the biggest problem with a low limit is your membership will see black-out times (when the list is held) and worry. When they post, but don't see their article appear, then worry. When your membership worries, the list owner will have (otherwise unnecessary) work to do. On the other hand, you should get it very clear in your mind why you are setting a limit and what the effects will be. Are you trying to stave-off a mail-bouncing war that will fill everyone's mail boxes with junk mail? (not likely with LISTSERV: thanks, Eric!). Do you have a member or two that dominate the list with many postings a day (that you don't want)? ("Daily-Threshhold" probably won't help save the list). Do you want to slow down discussions when a particularly interesting or caustic topic comes up? Ten mail files a day *is* a lot for some folks. And maybe those folks are especially valuable to your list. Give them the capability of subscribing with DIGESTS ... it doesn't cost a thing, assuming your LISTSERV is up-to-date. Mention to them the possibility of local or global redistributions such as NETNEWS/Usenet ... their site may have it available. cheers, Wayne Smith The College Hockey Discussion List administrator -- HOCKEY-L Systems Group - CAPS BITNET/CREN: wts@maine University of Maine System internet: [log in to unmask]
