Well, many people have said similar things to me by private e-mail; I can understand the attraction of using a newsreader (I love nn myself). But it is *painful* to me to get garbage in this group, which of all groups I wish stayed clean. For example, the *very next* message from LSTSRV-L was: > 425 Weekly DX News from Italy is lookin' for a WEB site ! > Is there any provider that can give us a page ????? Ugh! How about something like this (as suggested to me by others): make the newsgroup moderated, with postings sent to the LISTSERV, and the gateway one-way (LISTSERV to USENET only); thus, all postings pass through LISTSERV before going to USENET. Then, set LSTSRV-L to "Send=Private", allowing only subscribers to post. You can still post through your newsreader, you just have to subscribe first (getting the welcome message and, we hope, thinking a little bit first). You don't have to get a copy by mail; just SET LSTSRV-L NOMAIL. And those who wish to lurk don't have to change anything. I don't run any gated lists myself, but I have heard of this arrangement used on other lists. Does anyone see a problem with it? Would it help? Norm -- Hell is on the level: without realizing, you walk straight into it.
