It seems to me that it adds value and no one is forced to use it. I took advantage of their free trial offer a while back and thought the service looked useful. It is possible to do searches over multiple sources of information (which include various publications, not just lists and newsgroups), which seems like a valuable feature to me. While I haven't done it yet, when I get the time I probably will sign up for their plan that costs nothing if you don't use the service.
