I bounce mail from other lists to my list
sometimes to avoid having extra >>'s.
 
It confuses subscribers, makes them believe the poster is a
subscriber 'cause most don't look up at the, yes, preserved
header to see where the message is from.  I think it's a bad
practice, though I do it.
