New Restrictions on Membership of Mailing Lists on Joint Academic NETwork(JANET) in the UK The following note explains some new restrictions which are being applied to LISTSERV expansion at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory(RAL) which result in traffic giving rise to volume related charges. The users are being sent a warning message suggesting that they resubscribe to the list concerned via an Internet account or appropriate mail gateway. Until now, JANET mailing lists have been open to any valid electronic mail address. Following recent discussions with British Telecommunications(BT), it is now necessary to restrict membership of JANET mailing lists where the address results in traffic being sent to the BT operated public X.400 mail service. UKERNA has put in place the necessary blocks on the JANET mail gateway service. JANET mail managers will be contacted if their co-operation is needed to make this policy effective. The reason for mailing to the List Owner's list is to inform you that on or shortly after the 1 Oct 1996. You may as a List Owner's receive bounced mail message(s) from your list for one of these members. Penny Windebank RAL Listserv Admin.
