Ben & Francoise-
Thanks very much.
Ben- thanks for the tcpgui suggestion. Since I recently discovered it I've
been using it more and more. Front ended by some Perl scripts, it's been a
very flexible and reliable method for doing things- much better than via
email.
Unfortunately, we have two problems that I haven't been able to get
around:
- the requirement of managing multiple subscriptions for one person
to a single channel. For example, Jane might want to be subscribed
both at her primary email account and to a pager address. I don't
see any way to make Listserv natively handle that. The design
parameters demand Jane be able to login once to manage all of
her subscriptions- listserv's email based authentication won't
fly. Jane will authenticate to our LDAP as janedoe (or whatever)
and she should then be able to manage all her subscriptions.
Since we will (presumably) keep an audit trail of all subs, we
won't try to do listserv style confirms.
- tcpgui or any listserv query is just too slow to find all of
a person's subscriptions (2.5 minutes)
Francoise- we in fact are planning to get a Maestro trial, and your
sample page is a great introduction. Your comments about leveraging
Lsoft's development resources really rings a bell with me, and I've been
articulating that general position throughout our discussions.
Here's my understanding of what management is looking for:
- user autheticates via our LDAP with their netid
(tack @syr.edu onto this & you will *usually* have their primary
email address- but not always)
- page will display radio buttons or similar that shows all channels,
and which ones they are subscribed to.
- user can turn on or off, but also add subscriptions to a channel.
For channel "a", Might be [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask]
[haven't figured out how to display this]
- user can set their default subscription address
- we need an audit trail
This list is a great resource.
