Pete,
Listserv processing didn't seem to have any effect on the appearance of
the message. The only noticeable effect was that there were attachments
to the message apparent after Listserv processing when there were none
when processed only by Exchange/Outlook.
I should add to the process: the messages are sent through Exchange 2000
before being sent to Listserv. This is so the list addresses appear to
have an @hms.harvard.edu address.

I don't think there is a "best" especially when inline graphics to a
diverse MTA population are involved. Even within my client, there are a
number of options that affect presentation.
It was unclear to me what affect LISTSERV processing had (it seemed like
you said it did and did not make a dif):
