The history is that it makes it immediately clear that the mail is coming
from a mailing list.  In recent years the custom has been disregarded more
and more, but I think it is still a solid recommendation.

WRT "other tips", what are you looking for?  I think our manuals are fairly
complete....and the list's archives can be searched.
