A few weeks ago I had trouble with error messages bouncing back to my whole
list instead of just to me as owner. I deleted all subscribers at that
node, but the messages continued until I finally contacted someone who could
help. stop them. Here's the explanation, which comes with a warning that
similar problems may crop up again.

David Inouye, ECOLOG-L list owner, [log in to unmask]

I think we've tracked down the problem. And, I apologize because
it's a function of PC electronic mail systems.

We moved [subscriber] from one cc:Mail post office to another. He
isn't even available, and probably isn't educated properly to know
  that he should have unsubscribed.

As soon as they deleted him from his old post office, Ecolog-L
started getting automatically generated bounces from the
'Administrator' of that post office (no human intervention at all),
and hence, since it was replying, every message from Ecolog-L
generated a bounce to the whole list!

The really even nastier thing that cc:Mail does is that it removes
any hint of who the recipient of the message was meant to be.

I discovered this scenario, quite by accident, while using my
internal technical mailing list and sending a message to someone
else who had been moved (Sam was smart enough to tell *me* about his
move, so he had been removed from this list)!

Thanks, I just thought you'd like to know....this may become a more
prevalent problem as more organizations bring up PC based
proprietary mail systems with SMTP gates to the Internet!
