What is happening is your 'helpful' mail editor pgm is word-wrapping the
subscriber list lines that follow the List Header. The 2AAA etc stuff is
binary encoding for various subscriber options. It is position sensitive
and starts after the 80th char position of a line. When your 'helpful'
editor pgm wrapps the line it folds the long line stuff (normally off the
screen to the right side) around and puts it on a new line, which LISTSERV
treats like a new subscriber address.

If you still have a copy of the non-word-wrapped List, you can put that in
a different, non-word-wrapping editor to send. That will restore not only
the proper subscribers but also all of their SET options, date joined,
date of last renew, etc.

Direect manipulation of the List was a common operation for VM users, but
it is not the preferred method nowadays. There are other commands for
adding/deleting subscribers, and there are alo other commands for
manipulating the List header only.
