Even if there were such a method, what good would it do? I could
subscribe as John Doe, and the objective (of the original writer) of
having everyone "identify" themselves would still not be met.

All you can do is "require" that every subscriber use their "real" name,
and then if they lie and are identified as having lied, the owner can
take whatever action is deemed appropriate. Such requirements should be
spelled out in the INFO (info mailtpl) message to prospective
subscribers, so that everyone is on the same wavelength. Those who do
not wish to be identified by their _real_ names can decline to
subscribe.
