LISTSERV uses the From: header. If your list is not set to Confirm
subscription requests, then the faulty address will end up subscribed to
the list. The person will never know it, of course, since their command
will never be returned.

One of my lists, which does not require confirmation, has gotten a number
of malformed subscriptions in the year-and-a-half that it's been
operating. Usually, the problem comes down to the person putting their
username in their email program, but no domain. So they end up being
[log in to unmask] I have to wonder how those people get through
life. They must be very depressed that they never get any responses to
mail they send to anyone that isn't a local user.
