I know Doug doesn't like the WWW but if others would like to go to the
year-in-summary page on _all_ these awards
http://www.lsoft.com/news/choicewinners.asp
you will see that 5 of the 7 seven winners are in fact hosted at academic
institutions, and the nature of all these lists/sites is definitely
non-commercial if not always narrowly 'academic' in nature. The very first
award was made in the Education category for [log in to unmask] a
worldwide list of library/media center professionals. I'd call that rather
academic. The 6th winner (CharityChannel) is a not-for-profit organization.

Stofair is the only 'commercial' enterprise among these awards, and 'E-Mail
marketing' might reasonably be expected to be somewhat 'commercial' in nature.
Even so, the award to them was based on the way in which Stofair adapted
LISTSERV Maestro and LISTSERV communication technology to a commercial usage,
not that they made some money at it.
