> What is flaming and what are flames?

From our list:

~From: Joel Sax <jsax>
~Subject: Flames and the Friends

Definition of flaming: remarks directed at another person online
which are hurtful and unconstructive.

We must remember that our constructive criticisms may cause the
pain of growth. We should not use the pain as an excuse not to
voice them.

Unconstructive remarks need not hurt. Banter and friendly jokes
can bring joy to our online community.

As we write, we must evaluate our intentions. Are we seeking
change with our words? We must remember that negative labeling
rarely effects change. Descriptions of behavior are more
successful. If our words bring only joy to us because we have
"scored one" on another, then it is better that we not say them.
If we are enraged, then we should wait until the Spirit reveals to
us the best way to respond.

We must be honest with ourselves. Kind words at the end
of an otherwise hurtful and accusatory letter do not
minimize the abuse we have just delivered. If we feel
the need to ask for forgiveness, then we should review
our work in the Light and rewrite it or forget it altogether.

Do we reach out in courage to the flamer? Do we help
the one who has been flamed recover her or his dignity?

These words come from one who has flamed and been flamed online.

Joel
