you're in the same boat as the folks I pointed you to. They don't have a
separate website for each list either.  A database in the background of the
process, coupled with a couple of the templates, controls whether the
standard subscription web page is presented, or the members only
subscription web page is presented.  If you accidentally tried to subscribe
using the wrong page somehow (in either direction), you get a response
pointing you to the other page.

when you contact the address I gave you before, they'll also tell you which
templates you'll need to modify to control the members only application
