Thanks a lot! It sounds like a great strategy.  Up until just recently, list
administration has been no more than just helping people unsubscribe... once
we reached that 1200 user level, the task has become very intensive, as
people have created new demands and now I need to get creative to keep it
from imploding!

You could always do a:

     quiet set listname topics: -newtopic for *@*

to handle the job for your subscribers.
