I think  the problem is that  the translation for the  ASCII backslash on
your VM system is not reversible,  ie when LISTSERV sends a backslash you
get something, and when  you send that thing back to  LISTSERV it isn't a
backslash  any longer.  Consequently  it looks  like  you've changed  the
directory specification.
