You are prying under the hood of a smooth running car engine. You are
seeing LISTSERV's DISTRIBUTE function at work. Briefly, instead of your
host sending 1 email message to everyone on your list, LISTSERV figures
out that x number of recipients are all 'near' another LISTSERV host
site.
So your LISTSERV sends a 'Job' consisting of 1 copy of the message, and
the list of the x recipients to that other host with instructions that
say 'Please forward this msg to these addresses local to you.'
This is a very simplified explanation of a complex mechanism, but is one
of the 'secrets' of LISTSERV's power to widely distribute msgs with
maximum network efficiency.
