This is what is puzzling me because I have always had information in that
portion of the header which was overwritten by Listserv somehow.

As I stated above, we are including only specific information which we feel
contributes vastly to the discussion on the list.  This is hardly in the
league of an address book, scheduler, etc.  A nice compromise might be to
have even fifty or sixty characters to work with.  After all, no one HAS to
use that space:-)  It would be nice to have the flexibility, that's all.

Making the information public in our instance has nothing to do with our
wish for the people on the list to know readily the geographic location and
zone of the member's garden or plants being discussed.  What is "not
needed" for one list might be considered important for another and in our
case, we are trying to accommodate the list members, not the public.  With
this in view, I think that the kind of change I am proposing is moderate,
but helpful.

Interesting that this quote is really from Erasmus; learn something new
