I don't know about any trends, but I charge for membership on my list.
The primary reason I do it is to restrict the list to people who have a
serious professional interest in the topic.  It will soon be making more
money than I'm interested in, and I intend on keeping the charge, but
sending the excess to some international charitible organization (I'm
considering UNICEF).
