I would prefer Michael's other suggestion: creation of a catalog and
files.  Access to the files are well-defined by LISTSERV documentation
and thus are not "quirky" to the average subscriber e.g.,

GET fn.ft

and doesn't change location when the archives are "trimmed" "editted' or
otherwise mucked with.
