Here  are  the  latest  EARN  statistics. Note  that  they  measure  real
availability, not the ratio of how often  the BITNET link was up when the
Internet  link  also was.  International  lines  suffer from  many  small
outages (from  a few  seconds to  a few  minutes), which  in the  case of
BITNET usually  means the link goes  down and stays down  until automatic
retries bring  it up, usually about  5 minutes later. Note  also that the
SEARN figures  are particularly  bad due to  major hardware  and software
upgrades which kept the machine unavailable  for a couple dozen hours. As
you  will see,  availability depends  very much  on the  site. Egypt  for
instance has  awful results due to  being shut down outside  office hours
and during any religious holiday.
