user decide their nickname a little like AOL and their screen names ...

One benefit for the user is to be able to view mail "anonymously"
without getting his/her work e-mail account ... I would speculate that
the trend will increase since the US governement started a witch hunt at
different levels for misuse of public property ...
 
Hotmail.com is bona fide domain where they use "free accounts" to
develop the next Web Base mail software in the HyperNews traidition ...
