A long time ago, in a land far far away, this was a possibility. It is
now increasingly more difficult to do this as most respected sights out
there have decided not to follow the RFCs and to not allow "relaying" of
messages. I can't even send a message from a mailto: URL from my web
browser at home through my university's server. (I'm not surprised that I
could just change the SMTP and POP server to my ISP here at home and that
it went through, in part because they do terrible service.)

Basically, pdr, your suggestion sounds good, but for most people these
days, due to the onslaught of spammers using the relaying method of
distribution, it will probably not work very well.
