When you are rafting down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon, you
can use solar cells to charge your laptop batteries, but depending on where
you are on the river, you don't always have a clear view of southern sky
for your satellite phone, and cellular/PCS coverage in the canyon is still
spotty.  Until the Iridium network is fully activated, the best solution is
to hire a local TV company to track your raft with a directional microwave
link, or you can have a helicopter lift you in & out of the canyon a
intervals.  Or you can just use the phone at Phantom Ranch.

It is expected that moderators will process their mail at least 4 times a
day, so you'll still be somewhat able to enjoy yourself, no reason not to
go on vacation.   (You mean you didn't read the fine print in that
contract?  Too bad for you...)

Visiting the tropical Caribbean island of Montserrat is not recommended
however, because the dust clouds from the active volcano prevents daily
flights, and also interferes with the satellite phone, and gets into
everything!
