I'll assume that the list is SEND= PRIVATE (or stronger) ...

It "depends"

Subscription= by_owner

where the owner does not do the ADD

FILTER= ALSO,luserid@node

or manually QUIET ADD the userid and then do a QUIET SET NOMAIL NOPOST
(though the user could then do a SET MAIL, but not do POST)
