It's only after re-reading the message that I noticed that the
*localpart* was mangled, whereas I had assumed that the problem
was in the domain part in combination with MX records.
 
When investigating it, I found that we have a highly pathological
case here that hadn't come up in even my wildest dreams... ;-)
 
Indeed .earn and .netnorth are rewritten to .bitnet, but this was
meant to happen only in the domain part. However, this particular
example unveiled that it was also happening in the localpart!
 
The bug has been fixed now.
