One quick fix for controlling spam on a list is to make it moderated.
 
The moderator will have to rreview everything sent to the list to
approve it, and some people may consider this Fascist censorship but it
certainly stops spam and flames in their tracks.
 
I also stand by my previous comment about making all lists:
 
subscribe open, by owner
send: private and
verify all.
 
This can slow down hit and run artists.
 
Does make for more work but when the spam is over, the list can once
again be un-moderated.
