Straight from the horse's mouth:

Multiple Processors. While LISTSERV itself will not use multiple processors
(LISTSERV is a single-threaded application), overall machine performance may
be enhanced by use of multiple processors if other applications running
simutaneously on the machine can take advantage of them.

Check the installation notes found at
ftp://ftp.lsoft.com/DOCUMENTS/instalnt.rtf.

Haven't started using LSMTP (yet...coming soon!) so can't comment there.
I'd imagine so unless you're trying to have multiple threads of each service
running.  You'd be in uncharted waters in that case.
