I posted this question to CARR-L and received this response to which I
have also received permission to x-post to LSTOWN-L.

<Question>
Dear Fellow CARR-Lers:

FYI we have 141 AOL subscribers out of a total of 1842. From time to
time, an AOL subscriber will reject CARR-L email from another poster, and
not know it -- this reject will bounce back to the list operators
(Elliott and myself).

Since neither one of us "know" how to configure an AOL client email
system to NOT do this, perhaps one of you can post to the list the
procedure by which an AOL user can change their anti-spam filter to allow
postings. Here is an example redacted:

I've learned from experience, having inadvertently perhaps deleted a
posting from elliott or pete as spam. Here's how to make sure you do get
email from CARR (or others) you want:

(1) In "Mail," go to "Mail Controls"
(2) click on "next" -- there you can "allow all email to this screen
name, block all email or customize" -- click on "customize")
(3) this will take you to a longer list of options, that includes
blocking or allowing email from specific users -- along with a list to
which you can add or delete email addresses to be blocked. Scroll down to
see if carr-L, elliott or pete are listed there and if so click on "remove."
(4) keep hitting "next" till you get to the last page, which says you
"will not receive email from these addresses" and gives you the new
list. then click on "save" the new list, and exit. Make sure you do
this. If you don't get to this last step your changes won't "take."
(5) Finally -- be careful when using the "block" feature at the bottom of
your emails to make sure you don't inadvertently send valued
correspondents to oblivion. (If you do, go back to step (1) to fix the
problem).
