To supplement what Pete said,  there is a stock message in the default
mailtpl the subscriber gets when the request is sent to you for possible
approval.  The stock message is:

> Your request to join the &LISTNAME list has been forwarded to the list
> owner for approval. If you have any question about the list, you can
> reach the list owner at &OWNER.

You can alter or remove this message if your list has its own mailtpl
file.
