The second of L-Soft's 10th anniversary LISTSERV Choice Awards is the
Newsletter Award, which has been won by the GERMNEWS newsletter hosted at
the Fraunhofer Institute ([log in to unmask]). GERMNEWS keeps over
5,000 subscribers in 90 countries up to date with current events and
politics in Germany. Like L-Soft, GERMNEWS recently celebrated its 10th
anniversary, but this is not why we chose it :-) The judges were
impressed by the reach of the newsletter and the dedication of the
volunteer editors and translators who compile German news items daily and
make them available in both German and English. Personally, what
impressed me the most is that 27% of the readers of the German language
edition are located in Germany. It is one thing to compete with the
occasional 50-word article in the international section of foreign
newspapers - I still remember reading about the death of Francois
Mitterrand in the major newspaper my hotel provided every day free of
charge, a few words squeezed between important sport news and some kind
of new tooth bleaching system. But GERMNEWS is able to attract
substantial interest even from people who live in Germany, speak German
and have easy access to premium commercial news sources. This speaks
volumes about the quality of the list and the competence of its staff.
