The techniques of editing Notebook Log files are explained in detail at

  http://www.lsoft.com/dead/editlogs.html

The advisability, legality, ethics, etc have been discussed at length on this
list previously and you may search the archives for that. As Douglas
explained, you must HOLD the list if you are working on a current (active) log
file so that it is not written to while you are editing. Inactive (last
month's) log files are not such a problem. There can also be problems with
the Digest which must stay in 'sync' with the current archive, so it is also
necessary to 'force' out the current digest before editing a current archive.
It is usually easier to wait until the next archive has begun. Also monthly
archives tend to be quite large and may require special handling. Few mail
programs can handle 5mb message texts (archives cannot be sent as
attachments).
