LDBASE date searching problem

Since the postmaster here removed some old log files, the
search command no longer handles dates correctly.  Doing a
S * IN ACTIV-L SINCE 930501
selects ALL the articles, while doing a
S * IN ACTIV-L FROM 930510 TO 930513
selects no articles.
The database has been refreshed to no avail.  What to do?

P.S. The postmaster also erased ACTIV-L DBINDEX and DBNAMES after removing
the old logs.
