While an index might be helpful, I think the table of contents break down
the topic areas well.

Having said that, my initial impression of the listserv software back when I
started was that the manual was written for technically orientated people.
I tended to feel that was in part because they wanted technically oriented
people that would not be afraid to dig into the manuals and really learn how
to make it operate, without pestering an administrator to just set
everything up to let it run on it's own. And lets face it, anybody starting
with VM and Unix systems starting many years ago does everything technically
orientated :)

There are some merits to a system like this. There are ton's of wanna be
list administrators that want all the glory (they think) of running an email
list, little realizing that it actually takes some time, effort and work to
create a successful and sustaining list, and they should know how their
software works.

In a lot of respects, throwing a listserv manual at a person and asking for
a list header as a pre-requisit, or at a minimum a sponser willing to help,
to giving them a list quickly weeds out the wanna-be's from the people that
really have a desire to invest the time and energy in it. I can't even
count the number of people that just got on the internet asking how they can
set up a list, (half, without even having participated in one yet).

Probably good for site maintainers; probably not as helpful for LSOFT.

Probably would be interesteding to find out how many abandoned groups have
appeared on Yahoo (and before) by now.

Just my opinion though, nothing I'll fight about.

Rats, I had drafted up a complete walk through once upon a time and now I
can't find the darn thing.... I think it's stuck on an 8mm tape. Pretty
handy since I don't have an 8mm drive now.
