All you need to do is set SEND=owners, then PUT a template file for
that listname written in such a way that the "You are not authorized to
post..." message is replaced by "This list is taking a break for X
days..." or somne such.
No one but owners can post, and no one is confused by the "Not
authorized" message.
I'm not sure if SEND= None is correct syntax, but that would REALLY
quiet the list!
