If I download 1.8d from the web site and then install it "over" 1.8c, will it leave all my lists and my various configurations (including LAK and mail server settings etc) intact? Any answers or advice?

Well, bottom line, 1.8c is not Y2K-compliant and won't ever be certified
as such.  You are going to need 1.8d.
