Hello,

I have been running AUTINET FORUM, an Autism/Asperger's
Syndrome discussion list, for the last six years.

Recently, as I'm sure you all know spammers have got really active
and sneaky.

AUTINET is configured to only accept postings from those subscribed
and I vet all would-be subscribers. This has, so far, kept spammers
off the list.

However, a new threat comes from spammers who spoof the list
address itself. The LISTSERV (v 1.8d) dutifully sends back a
message to (who it assumes is the) unsubscribed poster with
the often obscene posting included below the error message.

This means, of course, that the message still gets through. I tried a
number of ways of changing the list config. that did not seem to help
and finally resorted to a rather inelegant method which is to quietly
subscribe the list's address to the list, quietly set it to nomail and
then quietly to review.

However, this means that the subject (which may be obscene) is
mentioned in the reject message which is still posted to the list
and, of course, starting with something like

> Your message dated Thu, 29 Aug 2002 10:33:22 -0500 with subject "Tiny
Teens"
> has been submitted to the moderator of the AUTINET list: "AUTINET
FORUM
> Listowner (Peter Wise)" <[log in to unmask]>.

is confused by members as something addressed to them personally.

Please give me a better solution. Is this problem solved on 1.8e?

An additional problem (probably unrelated) is that every poster now
gets a "multiple posting" message for single postings. Any Ideas?

Peter Wise,
AUTINET FORUM Listowner.
