I think that the reason that the current 'fad', to use your word, is
that way because a high percentage of SPAM arrives in the guise of a
opt-out mailing list. Most of us, when we see a message telling us
that we now belong to a list but we can have our name -removed- often
automatically go into SPAM-fighting mode, sometimes without checking to
see if the mailing list might be something we might have solicited.
