Many thanks to everyone that took the time to tell me I had sent a
SUBSCRIBE subcommand to the wrong address (not to the listserv site).
 
The irony is that I have been on the internet for quite some time and am on
several listservs already.  I know how to do it.  But I double-clicked on
the wrong address.  Just when I did it I thought, "Oh my gosh, [!@#!%&*]
what a way to start a new relationship on a list.  Everyone will think I am
a doofus."
 
If you DID think that, you certainly were polite about it.  Thanks again
for wasting your time on me.
