TEXT/PLAIN (68 lines)
I'd like to second Jeff on this request. I also very much
want to know of any mail program besides Ricemail that
will put in correct Resent headers. As many of you may
remember, I've asked about this before on this list.

Here's what I found so far. People tell me that there
is a plug-in for Eudora for the MAC that will do it.
I don't have a MAC though, and no one has said which plug-in it
is. My MAC friends haven't been able to locate it. Apparently
it doesn't work on any of the IBM versions (as far as I've
heard.) I was also told Pegasus mail would create correct
resent headers, but all my tests failed.

Someone suggested a lengthy procedure in Pine involving
saving all the postings for the day in a file, then
editing them with Pico, then bouncing them to my list.
(Pine does have resent headers, but only for bounces,
and it won't let you edit bounces.) I thought that
would work, but listserv was too smart, and figured out
the trick apparently (at least the messages didn't come
through correctly). Besides it took so much extra time
to do, that I gave it up after several experiments.

Someone else suggested MH. I even bought the manual.
It's a world of it's own, and I suspect I'll never
have time to learn it well enough to figure out if
it would work. Even then the interface looks like it
would be difficult to deal with on a high volume
list.

Like Jeff, I edit every EDTECH message to cut massive
extraneous requoted lines that consistently appear, and
to make sure that the full name and address of each subscriber
appears in their messages. We very much like being able
to sort by author in our WWW archive and in Usenet news.
It appears impossible to do this on a moderated list
where any editing at all is done to the messages.

So our current choice seems to be to let large amounts of
extraneous junk go through on frequently unsigned messages,
or to not let the subscribers sort by author when they
read their messages, or look in the archives. Since
Ricemail is about to go away, I'm very sadly deciding
to soon tell the subscribers there will no longer be a
way to determine who wrote a message without reading it,
and no way to sort archived messages by author.

I very much wish there was any other solution than
Ricemail too, and would be glad to hear if anyone has
found one in the year or so since I last asked about his.

Thanks for all insights into this problem.
