Just a thought ...

Though what you said is true about "searchability,"  it is also probably
true that the assumption is accurate "that there _is_ no benefit" i.e.,
if the functionality that might be provided by an advanced programmer is
being asked by someone who hasn't figured out how to get the files, then
there is probably no benefit, especiality since downloaded files will be
immediately out of synch starting with the next distributed message and
which there is apparently no mention of maintaining it.

Furthermore, depending on list policy, there may be some other issues as
to who has the "rights" to the compilation and derivative works.
