Some mail tools and/or service providers insert hard returns (line feed
and/or carriage return), others do not. I've received email with over
20,000 characters and no line break... the assumption is that the
receiver wants the msg to wrap at their terminal width, not that of
the sender.
 
I manually wrap lines at around 70 characters, which is really ugly for
those using proportional-spacing fonts. It works well with fixed-pitch
fonts like courier, which is the default on most printers.
 
Line length has nothing to do with listserv, but it's a constant source
of irritation for both sides of the fence (to wrap, or not to wrap,
THAT is the question).
