I have setup what I call an Owner Digest. It is an experiment, to help
out a fellow listowner. This owner now gets a single daily message, that
has all the owner traffic in it. All notifications (like sub and unsub),
all error messages, the listserv Daily Monitoring Report, any mail to the
owner mailbox, and so on. I will give you a sample issue of the Owner
digest at the end of this email.

By using mail filters, off a unix host, I was able to truncate the length
of the error messages. If you have an active list, and are sending out
large digests, then when they come back in the form of error messages it
can be inconvenient if there are a lot of them. I truncate the messages
at 60 lines right now per error message, instead of 50K or more for max
size digests that are error messages. So, besides the convenience, there is
much less room taken up in the inbox. If someone was on a service where
they had to pay for their emails, then this would be a valuable tool.

Since the information is all in 1 file, you can 'forward' it back to
listserv, delete the unecessary parts, and in a single message do all
your deletes and adds and subscription changes. And, scanning the
Topics list at the start of the Owner Digest gives you a quick feeling
for how the list is going that day.

Some of my friends that have lists also want this, but since it has the
mail filters and is a separate list to setup, there is some work
involved. It would be much better if this were built into listserv
itself; so there would be the list digest for subscribers, and the owner
digest for the owners. It is also a good tool to enable all the owners
on a shared list to know what is going on.

There is also a command summary at the start of each of these Owner
Digests, which is not meant to explain commands but rather to serve as a
reminder, since if you don't use a command too often it is easy to forget
the syntax.

So I am posting this to see how many others would be interested in such a
thing. I am hoping this idea seems appealing! Please give your comments
and suggestions for improvement, and send them back to Lstown-L/Lstsrv-L so
everyone can follow the discussion on this.

Thanks,

Kevin

There may have been a problem delivering your mail message. Please
examine the error message below for details.

If the error message below says "User unknown" it is likely that the
username is typed incorrectly or no longer exists. You can use the "ph"
or "finger" command to lookup a persons email address.

If the error message says "Host unknown", that usually indicates that
the you have incorrectly spelled the hosts address. If the error
message mentions a host of the form "nsXXX.load.lehigh.edu", please
re-address your message to the [log in to unmask], rather than that host.

If the error message says "Sucessfully delivered", then that means
that your message was put into the "mailbox" specified. This does
not indicate that the person it was addressed to has read it.

If you are still having problems understanding the bounce message,
please feel free to call the Computing Center Hotline, at (610)
758-4141 or send e-mail to [log in to unmask]
